Of course this site would be remiss if we didn't mention the LEGENDARY Oum Kalthoum!
Oum Kalthoum (1904-1975) was the greatest vocalist in the Arab world, and is regarded as the most gifted female vocalist of the 20th century. Her career as an undisputed diva spanned decades. She was so loved that people comitted suicide upon hearing of her death, and her funeral attendance was in the millions, second in Egypt only to President Gamal Abdel Nasser. It must be said that Oum Kalthoum is not everyone’s cup of mint tea; this is deep and uncompromising Arab music and a very far cry from any bellydance clichés.
There are some remastered CDs available if you look hard enough!
